30-Second Summary
What you'll learn from this article
- Build new accounts with manual audiences; the automatic option teaches you nothing.
- Advantage+ can deliver fast results while hiding which audience actually worked.
- Audience tests and creative tests are structured separately, never mixed.
- Consider Advantage+ only once pixel and Conversions API are healthy and data has accumulated.
- Exclusion lists are built by hand under either approach.
When you open Meta's campaign builder the system asks you to make one decision: will you build the audience, or should Meta find it? The automatic option, branded Advantage+, lets you launch without selecting interests and with almost no constraints beyond age and location. It sounds easy and often it genuinely is. Even so, on accounts we set up from scratch we build audiences manually. This article explains the reasoning behind that decision and the conditions under which it changes.
What the two approaches actually change
With manual targeting you draw the first boundary around who sees the ad: interests, behaviours, age, location, language. Meta optimises inside that boundary. Advantage+ removes the boundary; the system roams the whole user pool and shows the ad to whoever it believes will convert. The difference is not primarily one of performance but of information. Under the first approach you finish the campaign holding a table of which audience worked; under the second you hold only a total.
On a new account, learning matters as much as selling
In its first three months an ad account is not only there to produce sales. That is the period in which you learn which message lands, which image stops the scroll, and which age group fills in the form. That knowledge drives your budget decisions in months two and three. Start with Advantage+ and you never build the table; even when results are good you do not know why, and when they degrade you have nothing to hold on to.
A concrete example makes this clearer. Running a service business with a manual setup, by the end of month two you might see that most form submissions came from one particular age band and two specific interests. That lets you shift budget and rewrite creative for those people. With an automatic setup the same forms may arrive, but the distinction is simply not available to you.
Manual does not mean narrow
Manual targeting is not narrow targeting. A frequent mistake is limiting interests to three or four options and shrinking the audience to a few thousand people. Our method is the opposite: think about the person your product or service speaks to, list their interests, and select every relevant option as broadly as you reasonably can. Leave the system room to work, then narrow later based on data. Narrowing from the start lengthens the learning phase and raises cost.
Do not mix up your test structure
Whichever approach you choose, testing follows one rule. If you are comparing creatives, they belong as separate ads inside the same ad set. If you are comparing audiences, the creative stays fixed and the audiences split into separate ad sets. The same rule applies if you want to compare Advantage+ against a manual build: two separate ad sets, identical image and video. Change both variables and you will never know which one produced the result.
Advantage+ Shopping and Advantage+ Audience are not the same
Much of the confusion comes from the naming. Meta applied the Advantage label to several different features that do different jobs. Advantage+ Shopping is an integrated campaign type built for e-commerce, fed by a catalogue and purchase signal. Advantage+ Audience is a setting that loosens the targeting boundary inside any campaign. On the placement side there is also Advantage+ Placements, which lets the ad distribute across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Audience Network. What we discuss in this article is the Advantage+ Audience setting. Recommending Advantage+ Shopping to a service business means switching on a setup that cannot work without a catalogue.
Our stance on placements is different and worth separating: letting the system handle placements is a reasonable starting point for most accounts, because you cannot know in advance which screen converts the same creative more cheaply. Handing over the audience and handing over the placement do not carry the same risk.
The cost of switching approach mid-flight
Changing the targeting setting while a campaign is live restarts the learning phase. Part of the signal accumulated until then is discarded and cost rises for a few days. That is why, when we want to move from manual toward Advantage+, we do not edit the running ad set. We open a second ad set alongside it and let both run. The decision follows once the two sets produce comparable data. Opening a new set rather than tampering with a live one keeps the comparison clean and protects current performance.
The same principle applies to budget changes. Doubling a budget in one step can reset learning; incremental increases are safer.
When Advantage+ starts to make sense
We are not categorically opposed to automatic targeting. There is a threshold at which it becomes meaningful, and that threshold is about data. If the account has accumulated enough conversions, if the pixel and Conversions API are both healthy, and if audience pools from earlier campaigns have filled, then the system genuinely has signal to optimise against. Under those conditions Advantage+ can beat a manual build. Switch it on before those conditions hold and the budget simply disperses across a very wide pool.
Our practical rule is this: the first build is manual, the audience pools fill, and measurement is verified. Only then is Advantage+ tested in a separate ad set against the manual build. Whichever wins takes the budget. That sequence puts the choice between convenience and learning at the right point in time.
Exclusion lists are manual either way
Automatic targeting does not remove your responsibility for exclusions. Showing a sales ad to existing customers wastes budget, and so does showing the same lead form to someone who already submitted it. Upload your customer list to the platform and use it both as a lookalike source and as an exclusion list. This step is not skipped just because Advantage+ is switched on.
One last point: the report reads differently under automatic targeting. A breakdown report on an Advantage+ ad set shows you age, gender and placement distribution, but that distribution is a photograph of what the system found, not a targeting decision you made. If you later want to build manually from that table, the data tells you who converted rather than which interest worked. Those are not the same thing, and missing the distinction makes moving from automatic back to manual harder than people expect.
Three questions that settle the decision
Has the account accumulated a meaningful number of conversions? Are the pixel and Conversions API both running and verified by a live test? Have your audience pools reached the size needed to generate lookalikes? If the answer is yes to all three, Advantage+ is worth testing. If it is no to any of them, stay manual.
